Cinematic ads stand out to me in a digital marketing space filled with content creation and at-home influencers. IMO, higher production value says: this is a "real" business that put money, time and effort toward a conversation with their intended customer. And if you're going to sell to me in this oversaturated landscape, it better be a quality pitch!

100%! I feel the same way - needs to be quality or I don't feel interested to buy!

I actually don't use Pinterest enough to notice the ads, but I did notice Pinterest itself has outdated content in terms of current trends. You have to type in really specific key words to find the aesthetic you want. Sometimes I'll see relevant ads on there that actually make sense with the search and can be easily confused as a pin.

True! This is also a big issue for them!

Stay gold 💛!! Happy September my friend! Pinterest was my PLACE especially before the instagram save feature. Now it bugs me because of the ads and ruins the algorithm to give me good content. Glad I didn't make any typos in the field research :)

When I find myself on Pinterest it’s very specific or more to get ideas or inspiration. So sometimes the adds don’t bother me. They mostly exist while I’m in the homepage and now deep deep into a search. Either way, I’d prefer it not to be overrun by ads.

I agree, it’s mostly on the homepage for me where it bothers me most. Bottom line is that their ad placement needs some fixing!

I'm enjoying the cinematic ad experience! Like you pointed out, I think we will see more of it as Gen z demands and allows targeted ads and content.

When using Pintrest if I search a topic the ads become targeted to that and sometimes provide the image that I need for my board. You can still pin the ads onto a board. With that being said it's become my third place for board creation after Are.na and Cosmos.so

Interesting! So the ads actually help you with ideation.. even if it’s not ideal!

Exactly. Instead of just avoiding them I've accepted that sometimes it's exactly what I want. Sometimes it's even better than normal Pintrest, because if I find bathroom tile I love, there's a link to buy it rather than a product hunt. It's probably just the beginning of ad algo knowing what we want more than ourselves..

Pharmaceutical company’s are turning their ads into musicals - yuck, I hate them. A friend of mine told her doctor not to prescribe her Osempic - she hates that musical ad so much that she refuses to use their medication. She wanted a different prescription.

It’s annoying when it’s not for retail, especially for pharmaceutical companies!

with the rise of AI and "finding exactly what we are looking for" in terms of speech, photos, etc. (reverse google image search, speaking directly into ChatGPT, Claude, Jasper, etc.) Pinterest is lacking in terms of search engine optimization and overall search-ability. It never gives me exactly what I am in search of, puts it at a disadvantage imo. Now they've incorporated more ad space, and well, it all goes downhill from there.

PR is deluding everyone... UGH.

totally, i am honestly let down by pinterest - they have a powerful platform and the funding to accelerate their product and i fear they have gone overboard with the ads. i think that they have a lot of competition right now, especially with locker (which is a little different but a threat) and with the future of shopping/search in general

I love Locker— I also think it needs some adjustments, but definitely functions better than the shopping portion of Pinterest. Pinterest, in my opinion, is only functional as a “mood board” type tool, even though they attempt to dabble elsewhere. Many links are faulty or not there at all. It’s limited in scope and reach. ://

I use an ad-blocker but somehow I think Pinterest has found a way to circumvent it. It drives me crazy. I use Pinterest for two main things: creating my book moodboards and having a wish list in case anyone asks what I want for my birthday or whatever. The wish list is good because I need those clickable links I’ve gotten from the website itself, but the moodboards are trickier because I’m actively searching for content. The ads are completely irrelevant to my searches and clutter up what used to be a really aesthetically pleasing space. I used to look at my feed everyday in high school, but I haven’t done that in years. It’s a targeted search or nothing. I’m getting ads either way, but I do prefer the desktop version because the mobile one is absolutely inundated with them based on the small screen format.

i have an adblocker, so there have been lots of blank spaces on my Pinterest feed, so it's a little less insufferable. I have actually found the AI uploads more annoying
